Former NASCAR Racer Busted for Making Moonshine

Nope, this is not a repeat of some headline from the ’40s or ’50s. This is a headline from 3/4/2009. The racer Carl Dean Combs, who made 24 Winston Cup starts from 1981-1984, got busted just down the road from North Wilksboro Speedway in North Carolina.

According to a report on Jayski.com, “Combs 57, of Speedway Road, North Wilkesboro [NC], was charged with manufacturing non-tax paid liquor, as well as one count each of possessing, possessing ingredients to manufacture and possessing equipment to manufacture non-tax paid liquor, said N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) Agent Shon Tally. Tally said Combs was at his nearby residence when he and other ALE agents found the still in the back of a gray shop building behind a go-cart track, near the North Wilkesboro Speedway.”

Interestingly, Combs was a five-time champion of the now dead NASCAR Goody’s Dash Series and was a crew chief at one point for a car Junior Johnson owned. Johnson, of course, was busted during his driving days and went to the federal klink for running ‘shine.

We guess old habits die hard eh?
