Many of us often opine that America doesn’t make anything anymore. While it’s true we have shipped off a lot of manufacturing business to both our southward neighbors and to Asia, there’s still some good stuff happening on our own shores. We can still build horsepower, and the GE38 turboshaft engine proved that in spades the other day.
The GE38 is the engine that will provide the umph for the new CH-53K heavy lift helicopter that Sikorsky is developing for the US Marines. This bad Jose puts out 7,300 shaft hp and is the most powerful turboshaft engine ever tested at the GE plant where it is being assembled.
We’re not happy about losing any jobs or work to a foreign country and although it is sadly necessary to participate in the “world economy” we don’t have to like it. That being said, we’re still a country of people who can get junk done. The GE38 proves that there’s still plenty of brain power, engineering prowess, and manufacturing ability here in the good ol’ USA.
We’re raising our glass to a couple things. The first is to that fire breathing 7,300hp engine that’s soon to be helping our Marines do their work better. The second is the fact that it was built here on our shores, and the third is that today is a day that ends in y.
