The SoCal guys are rolling their eyes, but face it boys, this place and the weekly Friday cruise night it holds are something special. It’s a gathering spot for great cars, media types, industry moguls, and regular schmos, just like us.
The cruise is hosted by the venerable Burbank Road Kings car club, of which guys like Don Prudhomme are esteemed members (and he has been for more than four decades). This drive-in was the location where the famous Life magazine cover was shot featuring Norm Grabowski in his T-bucket. It’s actually in Toluca Lake, but everyone calls it Burbank, and that’s ok. The restaurant is the third-ever Bob’s Big Boy and the oldest one still standing.
In our one visit to the event some years back we learned that it is only acceptable to pull in to the place in a hot rod, kustom, muscle car, or other acceptable ride. A couple of ladies tried rolling up in a late model VW Beetle and when they tried actually pulling into a parking lot, some yelling and a wall of human beings greeted them. They parked on the street.
While Southern California is not what it was in the 1960’s anymore, it still is the ancestral home of hot rodding and stuff like the cruise at Bob’s is a great reminder of that.
Here’s a link to a gallery from last Friday’s cruise. Note the bitchin’ 1938 Chevy Gasser-rod of our own forum member Groucho.
