Gearhead Destination: Pikes Peak Highway

This week’s Gearhead Destination is Pikes Peak in Colorado. We’re sending you here not just for the world famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race, but also for the actual drive you can make in your own hot rod up the mountain.

Sure you won’t be hanging the tail mere inches from certain death, but you will be winding your way up and through some of the most beautiful scenery and territory that humans can lay eyes on. It is said to be the most visited mountain in the world, behind Japan’s Mount Fuji.

The highway climbs 6,710 feet to the summit at 14,110 feet of altitude. The trip is 19 miles each way (Yes the hill climb is far shorter, but they start a little way up the mountain) and if you time it right (like by being the first guy in line to go up in the morning) you may be able to have some fun with it.

If not, you’ll just have to hang back and give yourself some room to do a couple obligatory dirt throwing power slides.

There’s a website that gives some handy directions for climbing the road—mainly to “use lower gears.” They don’t give any advice on what to do in the event of a brake failure, but we think it involves kissing your ass goodbye.

Our research says that it costs $10.00 per adult (16 and over) and $5.00 per child aged 6-15. There’s a max cost of $35.00 per car and they accept credit cards. We wonder if you’ll get in trouble for going up and down several times in a day.

We think Ranger Rick may not be into that.
