Gearhead Destination: The Maxton Monster Mile

Gearhead Destination: The Maxton Monster Mile

This weekend marks the season opening event for the East Coast Timing Association and the first time in 2009 that the 1-mile, standing-start acceleration course at the old Laurinburg airport in North Carolina will see action.

You need to make this place a stop on any gearheaded adventure, even if you have no intention of wringing out your car down the course. You will see loads of unique machinery, meet crowds of insanely cool people and hear motors singing, and occasionally barfing at full song for a mile.

Imagine a dragstrip run and now multiply it by four. Now you’re starting to get the picture. The Hot Rod Top Speed Challenge is coming up this very weekend and historically it’s the biggest, most well attended meet of the year so that’s a bonus if you are a spectator but a slight detraction if you want to get the max amount of laps as a competitor.

We attended last year and drove other people’s junk fast. It’s just hella cool and you need to put it on your list of stuff to do, and sooner rather than later!
