Gearhead Destination: The Sand Hills Open Road Challenge

Gearhead Destination: The Sand Hills Open Road Challenge

The bustling metropolis of Arnold, Nebraska plays host to The Sandhills Open Road Challenge, a unique event that is part road course time trial and part top speed challenge. The 55-mile course is a massive loop that has straights that measure more than three miles long at some points.

The event also has some neat little side dishes, like the 1-mile shootout, and half-mile grudge drag races where two cars actually run heads up for half a mile. We could seriously get into that.

As you’d expect there are a bunch of rules that are dictated by the speed that you plan on running and the type of vehicle that you plan on beating on. Motorcycles are not invited, trucks are welcome.

This thing sounds like too much fun at nearly any speed so we strongly recommend that if you in or around the heartland of America you make your way over to watch, or even better, to beat on your stuff.

The website is super informative and has a copy of the rule book along with answers to just about any question you may have.

This year’s event is Aug 6-8, 2009. Be there or be somewhere else.
