GM will make significant changes to their policy of giving employees who want to buy a GM model big discounts. In the current version of the plan, no vehicles are off limits, so the hot selling models that everyone wants to own (read: Camaro) were given the same deep discounts as the junk no one wants (read: Hummers). After January 5th, the rules change.
Hot selling cars will not be given any discounts and the previous universal flat rate percentage discount will now vary from market to market and car to car. A dealer quoted in a ToledoOnTheMove.com story said that they have seen an uptick in GM employee sales as word has gotten out about the proposed changes to the system.
GM needs to be profitable and they cannot afford to sell cars at low to no margin to anyone, even their own employees. It is ironic that by getting the deep discounts, employees were actually working against themselves with respect to job security and the health of the parent company. Paying more now means that GM may actually clear a few bucks on each employee sale. A wild concept, we know.
