Goodguys’ Fuel Altered Match-Race Series

Goodguys’ Fuel Altered Match-Race Series

The Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing Series came out with an announcement the other day informing the world that it will host a match-race series between Rich Guasco’s “Pure Hell” AA/FA and Dave Hough’s Nanook AA/FA.

The pair will square off three times during the season at Goodguys races in the Midwestern section of the country. The races featuring the cars will be June 12-14 at Indy; August 28-30 in Norwalk, Ohio; and October 16-18 at Bowling Green, Kentucky.

If you live within driving distance of these tracks and fail to show up to see period correct, nitro-swilling Fuel Altereds, we’re kicking you off this site forever. This is totally a chance to see something that honestly does not happen very often any more.

The cars are not being driven by their owners and original operators. This AA/FA driving thing is a young man’s game. Guacso has hired Jason Richey to man Pure Hell and Hough has tapped Vince Generalao to do the deed for him.

These are two of the most historic of the legendary band of touring AA/FA from the late ’60s. Guasco’s car was always known as a top flight runner back in the day, often holding the national record. It is also interesting to note that although Hemi powered now, Pure Hell debuted with a blown small-block Chevy for power.

Nanook has been on the trail of match races and exhibition runs seemingly since the barnstorming days ended. The Houghs have been out there pounding out low-6-second laps out of the wild lime green car for decades.

We’re jacked up to hear of this program and our Travelocity trigger finger is itching for an airline ticket to one of these races. There are other Fuel Altereds running around out there, but they are not period correct cars like these two. This is going to be magical.
