Great Rant: British Writer Says, “Stuff the Planet, I’m Buying a New Car”

When a column beings with the line, “One of the delights of getting old is the realization that you don’t need to pretend you care about jack shit any more,” you know that you’ve just laid eyes on a winner. This blistering piece we found at TGDaily.com kicks all ass and sums up our thoughts nicely.

The author, Andrew Thomas, has finally reached the end of his PC rope and has decided to buy himself a new car, not just any car, but a supercharged, V8-powered Jag. He’s ditching a diesel Jag and replacing it with a properly powered job. Good on him.

This is less about global warming than it is about revolting against fear mongering, potentially opressive legislation on our freedom of movement, and the general malaise that seems to be hanging in the air these days. Horsepower has a funny way of removing us, in however fleeting a fashion, from these Debbie Downer topics.

No doubt about it, there are tree hugging, granola crunching, sandal wearing, weenies that read what Andrew Thomas has to say and think that he is the anti-Christ. For us gearheads, driving is about far more than the act of actually manipulating the car and the words in this column certainly speak to that point. His attitude is awesome.
