Great Read: A Look Back at the Career of Ohio George Montgomery

There are few living drag race legends that have the resume of “Ohio” George Montgomery. He was one of the primary movers and shakers of the gasser era, led the class in many evolutionary changes, he went on to be a dominant Comp Eliminator racer, has one of the oldest speed shops in the country and is an internationally respected engine builder. Simply put, he’s the freakin’ man.

Montgomery has been a staple of the Dayton, Ohio automotive scene since the early 1950’s and it is fitting that we’d learn several things we never knew about the man in a profile that ran in the local Dayton paper. We’ve had a strong working knowledge of his drag racing exploits for some time but never knew that he was involved in the development of the nuclear bomb, an integral part of Evel Knievel’s operation, and that he ran Bonneville in his youth. That’s big time stuff!

Below find a link to the Dayton newspaper story and below that a link to a mini-feature and gallery we ran on his turbocharged 1969 Mustang that terrorized the class in the early 1970s. If you want to see old tech, mechanical fuel injection, and a twin blown Boss 429, hit that link!
