A 22-year old Florida man was given three years of probation after stealing a locomotive and taking it on a seven-mile joy ride. The guy is described as being a train enthusiast and he’s obviously pretty smart. We wouldn’t know where the heck to start when firing up a locomotive. This incident has caused the rail company CSX to alter some of its security policies.
The man who took the train at least has a sense of humor, as he was driving it with a buddy, to a local bar where a popular band was playing that night. Police found the engine abandoned on the tracks in a dimly lit nursery according to a story in the Miami Herald.
You really need to read this story to see just how crafty this guy was. The fact that he fessed up and explained exactly how he did what he did is somewhat admirable, we suppose. There was no harm intended but the potential for massive carnage is obviously what scared officials. This guy drove the train through crossings and everything!
