Harold Martin Unveils Bizzaro Pro Mod

Harold Martin is a well known Pro Modified racer. He’s been the champion of nitrous and electronic fuel injection for many years and is widely recognized as one of the smartest racers in the business. He was a former GM engineer who has several patents in his name. He ran under the ACDelco colors for several years before running with National Guard livery on his hot rod last season in ADRL competition.

Martin has his own company called Martin Technologies where does development work for OEM manufacturers as well as work on his own projects, one of which happens to be an electric vehicle that has served as the inspiration for the strangest Pro Mod body the world has ever seen, and that’s saying something.

He calls it the M4 and street versions will be available with either normal gasoline-burning piston engines or as he has recently hinted, an electric drivetrain. There are zero details available at this point as to what the “real” version of the street car will look like, but we certainly hope its better looking than the race body. Yowza.

So you’re saying that he can’t use this body, right? Wrong. Apparently the IHRA is going to allow him to run as their Pro Mod body rule states only that the body must be accepted by the Technical Department prior to competition. There is no provision that the body must be from a “mass produced” model or “recognized manufacturer.” So long as the tech guys say it’s cool, it’s cool.

We think it’s not a great idea to be taking the class down this road. IHRA went a long way to stop the use of late-model bodies to stop people from confusing Pro Mods and Pro Stock (seriously, fair weather fans suck). Allowing this car will be akin to confusing the spectators between Pro Mod and spaceship racing.

We applaud the innovative qualities of this car, but it represents all the things the Ohio George Montgomery Mustang Gasser did, and none of them are good for the future of Pro Mod.

Don’t stare at the photos too long, you’ll get a headache.
