Hitting the Mainstream: The Los Angeles Times Covers Van Nuys Cruising

The seemingly spontaneous rebirth of cruising on the fabled Van Nuys Blvd. in Los Angeles was one of the few truly bright spots in 2009 for gearheads. What started as a small gathering of guys who used to cruise the strip every week expoloded into a real deal hot rod happening with each consecutive meet through the summer of 2009. Ironically, the shopkeepers and police who put an end to cruising in the area more than 20 years ago now embrace the cruisers that they once cursed.

We were suprised to see an LATimes.com story on the history of the Van Nuys scene and the rebirth of it (in a far more socially acceptable mindset) last year. Typically, any newspaper story involving cars or hot rods is hack-o-rama, but we really enjoyed reading this piece, especially because we were never there back in the good olds days.

When the cruise meets start up again for 2010 we’ll keep you up to date with photos and coverage. Until then, check out the story below for the history of Van Nuys Blvd and its longtime link with hot rodders.
