There are so many ways to get people into the gates of race tracks that have been developed over the decades. Big speeds, exotic fuels, and advancing technology are three of them but there’s one which has endured since the literal beginning days of automotive competition. It has been called Formula Libre, it has been called Unlimited, and it has been called Run Whatcha Brung. When track’s put on an event that is wide open, people show up in droves because we live and have lived in a racing world that’s been heavily dictated by rules for many, many decades. The tradition continues today and perhaps best at a small circle track in New Hampshire.
Hudson International Speedway is a 1/4-mile oval that is banked at 12-degrees and has the same kind of diverse weekly slate of classes that so many tracks around the country has. The good news is that basically once a year they throw all the rules and classes out and hold a race where the only requirements are basically that your entry has four wheels and a V8 engine. It makes magic as you will see here.
You’ll see cars that look like street stock or hobby stock style machines, modifieds, late models, a sprint car, super stocks, and more all piled onto one track at once. The outlaw late models with their incredibly massive side boards are just bizarre but effective, the far more basic lower class sportsman stock cars are tough looking but ultimately get swallowed up, and the racing is absolutely awesome by the time the feature shakes out.
This is really, really cool. This is what short track racing is about and who’s not a fan of seeing a piston powered battle royale?!
