We were tipped off to an incredible and sad story from the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia. Two men were killed when their Holden Commodore struck a palm tree at what must have been an incredible rate of speed because the impact sawed the car clear into two pieces lengthwise. The newspaper reported that the driver was “incinerated” in the driver’s seat while the passenger was ejected from the car on impact. Neither man survived.
According to the news story the debris field was spread some 300 feet from the actual point of impact and the ranking police officials interviewed for the story both said that the wreck was one of the, if not the worst one their had ever seen. Interestingly. there were no skid marks or evidence of another car. It was apparently just a couple of guys going way too fast when the driver lost the handle on the car.
The photos below show damage to the car and do not feature any gore. We’ve never seen a car end up like this after hitting a tree, telephone pole, or other similar object. We cannot begin to guess how fast they were going.

yeh, saw this on the news – I think it happened near where I lived in Perth (Western Australia) – I first saw that first photo on the paper and thought `thats gotta be fake…’ but a little later they showed it on the news and they walked around the wreck with a video camera.. bizarre the way the side came off virtually intact but – I’ve seen a pic somewhere on the net of a new camaro thats hit a pole and peeled the side off in a very similar way – interesting to compare the two as the Camaro wqas developed in Australia on the commodore platform. The car you see here is (was) pretty well a 4 door camaro..
