Insuring Your Junk; Shop Around

Insuring Your Junk; Shop Around

Having insurance on your junk is pretty vital. One stupid guy on a cell phone or an inattentive teenager can take your hot rod and turn it into a mangled mess of steel. Not having insurance is illegal in lots of states and nonsensical in all of them.

Like all things, it is a good idea to shop around for the best coverage packages, best prices, and best companies that are friendly to auto enthusiasts and gearheads. A recent discussion on this very topic on the Bangshift.com forums popped into our head when we ran across a piece in the Chicago Tribune.

In it, writer Kathy Kristof speaks of the differences in both philosophy, approach, and price between typical mainstream insurers like State Farm and smaller niche insurers that focus their efforts on antique and specialty vehicles.

One of the other confusing parts of the insurance game is that not all companies do business in all states and with respect to the smaller more niche minded companies, they tend to have usage rules that some may find restrictive. Like everything in life, there are pluses and minuses. Those who really do their homework and make an educated decision are the ones who come out ahead when it comes to stuff like this.
