On Sunday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jimmie Johnson joined two of the most legendary names in American racing, Petty and Earnhardt, by capturing his seventh championship in NASCAR’s top series. Johnson outlasted the three remaining Chase competitors (Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, and Carl Edwards) to take the win after having started at the back of the grid due to a prerace infringement. Johnson bested Kyle Larson on a late-race restart and then used Larson as a buffer to Logano, who would finish third.
The race didn’t come without controversy. Edwards had run at the front of the field for nearly the entire race, but in a restart with 11 laps left, he tangled with Chase rival Logano. That put Edwards into the inside wall and his wreck collected several others. Logano charged to the front in the closing laps and made a valiant effort toward a win, which would have given team owner Roger Penske championships in IndyCar and NASCAR for the first time in one season. It was not to be, however, as Johnson held off Logano.
Johnson’s win was his first ever at Homestead and at age 41, he is also the youngest NASCAR driver to win seven championships. Petty won his seventh title at 41, although he was a couple months older than Johnson. Earnhardt was 43 when he won his seventh title in 1994.
Not even the same thing or league as Sir Richard Or the Mighty Dale E. Not even.
Actually if you look at the competition level today it is probably harder to win a championship than it was in previous years .
So Vanilla wins a championship because Edwards gets a little crazy. The guys personality on tv is like well vanilla
All I care is that Toyota didn’t win it! When Logano took out Edwards, it was oh what a feeling!
Like NHRA I hate the playoff system, hate fuel mileage races, cookie cutter 1.5 tracks.Who won?
