Finding awesome junk on the side of the road is a true gearhead sport. BangShift.com forum member Andy (known as VT Junk on the board) is the Michael Jordan of the game and has amassed an amazing collection of stuff over the years. And he just spotted a recently freed, barn found, 1958 Chevy Super Stock drag car sitting in front of a gas station in upstate New York.
We’d love to find some background on this car, and we know there are plenty of guys out there who know tons of stock and super stock racing history, so spill the beans! The car was apparently campaigned by Paul Lukas and Jeff Wilson in the Schenectady, NY area.
The car is equipped with a small block that Andy believes is 327ci (we’re guessing it may be a 283). Seeing the classic gold colored Moroso valve covers makes us think that this baby was run all the way into the 1970s and/or early 1980s. It does appear to be a super stock car for the simple fact that it sports the ancient carb that would have topped a factory motor from back when, a full interior, and the SS/A on the rear window. We can’t see a clutch pedal in some of the other photos Andy posted, so it may be PowerGlide equipped. No roll bar means that it was probably a lower class car that wasn’t quick enough to mandate one.
The fender mounted fuel pressure gauge is interesting, the 10,000-rpm Sun tach with the adjustable red line set at 8,000 is neato, and the period lettering and paint are cool to the point of causing hyperventilation.
Do you know your New York Super Stock racing history? Spill the beans on this car!
