Larry Larson’s neato Comp Eliminator quest at the NHRA national event in Topeka, Kansas ended before the winner’s circle, but not before he dispatched a couple of Competition Eliminator veterans. This was of course, accomplished in his world beating 1966 Chevy II street car. The same one that has carried him to Hot Rod Drag Week glory more than a couple of times.
Due to bad weather, qualifying was reduced to a single pass, which was a less than stellar nine second run. While not the lap he was looking for, it did get him into the field, so he knew that he’d be racing on Sunday. In round one, Larry beat fellow Missouri resident Chad Voges in is K/Altered machine when Voges went .007 red. No doubt he looked over and said, “Wait? What the hell…”
In round two, it was the B/Dragster driven by Montana resident Clint Sallee. Sallee had defeated Larson’s buddy, and leader of Aeromotive, Steve Matusek in the previous round, so this was a revenge killing for Larry and he delivered the goods, beating Sallee to the stripe, after Sallee left on him at the tree.
The end came with only seven cars left in the eliminator, at the hands of Matt Harris and his E/Altered. Larry laid down a blistering 6.98-second lap, but Harris just had too much for him and took the stripe, ending Larson’s awesome story.
Look for Larry to try and defend his Drag Week crown yet again this year!
Here’s some video of his Chevy II cruising the Las Vegas strip!

Wonder if he’ll auto-cross the Nova…
Auto cross, rally, demolition derby….
I think this completely rules. When was the last time this happened? Given the ET’s my guess is never.
I’ve never seen larry auto cross the Nova but I’ve seen him doing donuts in the parking lot and a grass in-field.
