A 1987 Mustang originally bought new by Popular Hot Rodding’s editor Johnny Hunkins, who then turned it into the first magazine project street car Mustang to run 10s at the strip has resurfaced after years of hiding. Project Excalibur ran in Muscle Mustang and Fast Fords magazine from 1992 through 1999 as a test bed for the raging 5.0L Mustang aftermarket.
The car has gone through many changes since Hunkins last wheeled it down the streets and strips as Tech Editor at MM&FF. It rolled into the Tube Chassis Designz shop as a literal shell of itself, but Jon and John have a plan to revive the forlorn Fox. The rough plan at this point is to install a big block in the car (possibly Pro Charged), update the chassis to either SFI 25.3 of 25.4 spec and set the car up as a stock suspension 10.5-in tire machine.
We especially dig the small tire, stock suspension part as it is a small nod to the car’s street living past.
There are surely lots of people who think that this car should be put back to some form of the state it was in when Hunkins was building it and we can see that. We like the fact that the car is continuing to change and evolve, plus it will be quicker and faster than ever before, which rules in our book!
We’ll be following the whole build of this car, stay tuned!
when was the last time it was driven and who owns it now? is the cage that’s in it in the picture new or Hunkins installed? is it gonna be BBF like maybe a Kaase built Boss 600+ monster?
what else are you not tellin’ us and is it gonna be in the magazine MM&FF? okay i’m done with the questions…………….
