Legendary Funny Car Racer Pee Wee Wallace Passes at Age 79

Pee Wee Wallace, one of the great funny car racers in drag racing history passed away on January 28th, 2011. Wallace’s accomplishments included winning the NHRA Division One Funny Car Championship three years in a row (74,75,76), and totally terrorizing the eastern half of the United States on drag strips during his 25 year career. He won a lot of match races as well in a career that spanned from the age of altered wheelbase machines right through the 1970s. Many of his cars were famously called “The Virginian” but he was also found behind the wheel of the beautiful “Alabamian” Vega and Plymouth Satellite floppers, amongst others.

He was absolutely a racer’s racer and let his performances on the race track do the talking for him. Recognized by his peers through his induction into several drag racing “Halls of Fame”, Wallace got the due he was deserved, although probably later than it should have been dealt to him.

During his time, Pee Wee Wallace brought the fight to guys whose names sat far higher up on the marquee than his own, and often times won. Chances are, as you are reading this, he’s whipping someone’s ass on the big drag strip in the sky.
