I’ll admit it, when I first saw this rig prepping the track at Thompson Drag Raceway back in 2002 I laughed. It was just the shock of seeing a golf cart pulling a large truck tire after seeing dozens of other tracks perform the same operation with fancy tractors and drag units.
Funny thing, this set up worked great. They’d spray the track and drag the tire over it until the little golf cart and its weenie centrifugal clutch were unable to continue dragging said tire.
I happened to be at the track for the inaugural running of the Gasser Reunion, one of my favorite events that I’ve had the pleasure of covering. The track is a great place with lots of good Pro Stock match race history.
If you’ll notice, the track is actually sunken into the ground. It makes for great vantage points for taking photos and spectators also have a better view as the action is actually happening below them. The shutdown area is too short for modern professional stuff, but I’ll be damned if that little tire didn’t provide a world class starting line.
Once again, small track, tight budget ingenuity works just as good as the fancy pants stuff.
Now, caption this photo!
this is the last time the kids borrow my cart ,they even put the wrong spare in the back!
1. It’s the new handicap index. The faster you go, we just add more tires.
2. Is this what you call drag racing where you come from?
3. There is no substitute for good brakes.
4. Let’s see them do this in NASCAR.
5. Well, it better than pushing a rope.
