Here’s some more fun from Lime Rock. This GT1 racer began his race with a hard top and ended with a roadster, much to his chagrin.
On talking to the driver, we learned that he was involved in some contact which he deemed inconsequential. The car drove and steered fine, so he did not see the need to drop out of his race.
What he didn’t realize, according to him, was that the body had broken just above the windshield and when he was making full steam down the front straight, enough wind got under the small gap between the top of the intact windshield and the bottom of the broken roof to literally tear off the entire thing in one piece.
I watched it peel off like a large, plastic sticky note. Turn workers carried the piece off of the racing surface and the driver obviously pitted after that lap. He went to retrieve the top of his car and I did a double take when I saw a racer carrying the roof of a Corvette over his head.
You just can’t make this stuff up.
