Money No Object: 1977 Buick Century – Less Can Be More

Money No Object: 1977 Buick Century – Less Can Be More

Mecum Auctions’ Kissimmee 2020 event is currently underway, and right now the biggest question from their show is a doozy: “How much do you think the Bullitt Mustang will go for?” Because, this year, it’s not just “a” Bullitt Mustang, it’s “the” Bullitt Mustang, the 1968 fastback that was hidden from the public all the way up until the Mustang’s 50th anniversary, the car that Steve McQueen desperately tried to buy back. Yeah, unrestored and all, that car. How much will it bring in? Enough to require a couple of medium-duty trucks to haul the cash away for sure, we’d bet. And there are plenty of machines like that in the queue, but with a few more days of auction time counting down, we decided to give the auction one last look to see what might be interesting.

And catching our eye is this 1977 Buick Century. We’ve been warm to “Colonnade”-era A-body cars for years. I’m a strong fan of them myself, having owned one. But the Century isn’t the first car that comes to mind for this generation…usually, it’s either a Chevelle Laguna, an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme or an El Camino. Buicks, like most of the Pontiacs, were kind of sidelined in this generation for one reason or another. But this one…oooh, yes, all day long. It’s got paint for days. It’s got one of the sweetest A-body interiors we’ve seen in…well, ever, really. The wheels are good, the height is right, and the 462ci stroker Buick warms our evil little hearts. But note what it doesn’t have: a ton of excessive mods like an all-out Pro Touring setup, or full caging. It’s simple. It’s gorgeous. And there is no reason whatsoever to change up any of this program.

After the old Pro Stockers, the Hemis and experimental Shelbys and other high-end cars are sold and the heavy hitters are gone…what do you think this Buick will go for?

That IS sweet! They can drop it off here if no one else wants it. AND they kept it Buick powered. Well out of my price range, though.

Nice car, agree not overdone. I would guess maybe $30-35K? I can’t imagine someone paying more than this but who knows. I have seen stranger things happen at these televised car suctions.
