NASCAR’s smash ’em, crash ’em season finisher in Florida

Denny Hamlin kept his word and wrecked Brad Kaselowski during the NASCAR Nationwide race on Saturday last weekend. This ended the season, but kept the streak alive of Hamlin and Kaselowski crashing into each other at nearly every race. We hear that they wrecked their rental cars at the return center just to prove a point. All this stuff raises an interesting question. Do you watch for the wrecks and personal conflict or for the racing?

A story from the Canadian Press looks at this question in a roundabout way by breaking down the weekend and then talking to NASCAR officials about their policies regarding driver conduct, fighting, and crashing each other. In the interview, Mike Helton admits that they went too far in sanitizing the sport and have relaxed their enforcement of the rules with respect to the guys being able to get after each other a little, both on the track and in the pits.

So what draws you to watch racing? Is it the fast cars of the people behind the wheel and how they interact with each other?
