Yesterday, Brian Sweeney, a twenty-year GM employee, was named the new head honcho of the Buick and GMC brands. He is the third person this month (you read that right) to hold the job. His predecessor, Michael Richards, bolted after only nine days at the helm. Sweeney comes from the advertising side of the business and has been affiliated with the Buick brand for several years, so he should understand the corporate direction that the company wants for Buick.
Sales in Asia have led Buick to be one of the most important brands in the ever-shrinking GM fold. Domestically, GM seems to be steering Buick toward a younger, more affluent demographic (mainly because the previous demographic, people on death’s door, is shrinking). They have also begun to design specific models just for the Asian marketplace.
The good news for Sweeney is that he can’t do any worse than the last guy, who apparently saw a ghost in his office one day and beat feet. Reuters has the details on the man who is now steering one of GM’s most hopeful and promising brands for the future. Advice? Don’t screw it up.
