There was a time when people thought that there would only be so many of the famed Ford 427 SOHC engines left in the world and once they were “gone” they’d be lost to history. Those people weren’t all that smart because hot rodders don’t let their legends die, they reinvent, recreate, and in many ways improve on them to both keep their legacy alive and make their own cars run harder and faster. COMP Cams is proof positive of this method of thinking as they continue to serve the engine builders and imaginative hot rodders of the world with products like this 427 SOHC stub cam, which is a 100% mandatory piece to have in a SOHC Ford build.
The stub cams drive the distributor, oil pump, provide lubrication to the left head, and they also mount the timing sprockets as well. The best part? Because COMP is manufacturing them, you can rest assured that their quality will be unimpeachable. Building a SOHC? Dreaming of a SOHC? Collecting parts for a SOHC? Score some stub cams from COMP!

COMP Cams® Ford 427 SOHC Stub Cam Is Perfect For Vintage Engine Builds
Memphis, TN – Vintage engine builders and enthusiasts have reason to celebrate with the revival by COMP Cams® of a hard-to-find Ford stub cam for the potent Ford 427 SOHC engine.
Developed over 90 days in the mid 60’s, banned from NASCAR, and ultimately finding success on the drag strip, the Ford 427 SOHC was one of the most powerful engines of its day. Recent aftermarket developments in blocks and heads have increased interest and availability of these engines that are common in modern period-correct builds. The Ford 427 SOHC utilizes a stub cam, which is used to drive the distributor and oil pump, mount the dual timing chain sprockets and provide oiling to the left head via an oiling groove in the bearing journal. COMP Cams® has recently made a stash of these parts available with an option for special engine builder group pricing. COMP® also currently offers custom cam grinds for Ford 427 SOHC engines, so this stub cam is a necessary companion piece to part no. 183-000-9L and 183-000-9R camshafts.

So where’s all these “missing” SOHCs coming from?
I can’t see the expense of creating replicas being justified which leaves some intelligent hoarding many moons ago to create an investment.
I wonder what the going rate for a SOHC is these days – I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more crawl out of the woodwork – which is no bad thing considering it is the coolest motor Ford ever made!
Builders.
There’s actually a thriving community of 427 Cammer builders out there, with a variety of options for heads, from factory-made to a couple of dedicated small-time shops making and improving on the SOHC castings.
It’s really cool! I’ve lurked on a few of their forums and these guys have it down to a science. It costs a pretty penny to buy into the Cammer club, but the community around them is just top-notch!
You can buy brand new SOHC heads. For 40K you can have a 100% brand new SOHC.
Cool!
I don’t suppose there’s any chance of lending me 40k until next century then mate?
The writer obviously doesn’t know that the stub cam on a Cammer goes in the block where the original camshaft resided and it’s only necessary to have ONE of them to have a fully-dressed engine.
