As Chad and I were cruising the 2011 SEMA show on Friday we happened upon a booth with a bad ass crash box for sale. Long known for their differentials and transmissions for foreign stuff, Quaife now manufacturers a sequentially shifted, six speed, dog-box style transmission for RWD cars and trucks. They have been on the market for a while now and are capable of handling up to 750hp, although we flaked and did not get a torque number. This is a bad ass transmission.
Being a “dog box” style transmission, it is filled with straight cut gears, hits each shift like Mike Tyson, and while workable on the street, will make the kinds of noises that make gearhead’s hair stand up and everyone else run for cover. We were yanking the handle on this thing hard enough to rip it off and the damned thing felt like it was hewn from granite.
It is pricey at around $14,000, but knowing more than one person that has blown up a worked over “traditional” transmissions, it ain’t as expensive as buying multiples of what combo is currently in your car. For track cars, it would be killer. Slapping up and down gears without the clutch, in incredibly rapid fashion will make you faster in and out of the corners. There are an amazing array of gearsets available. You can run it so that sixth is 1:1 or have both fifth and sixth as OD gears. The transmission is designed for easy service by the owner in the event you want to swap ratios between tracks, etc. Oh, and if we were not clear, once you let the clutch in for first gear to get rolling, you don’t need to touch it again until you stop, shifting both up and down. That is cool.
Here’s a look at the Quaife QBE69G –
Now if I had the cash I’d really be glad I went with a divorsed transfer case setup…
“Quaife” sounds like an expensive drink at Starbucks.
But what Bangshifters really need is a stout overdrive transmission that will handle 1,000+ h.p. for about 1/10th the price of the Q-Dog Box . . . .
Transmission technology is lagging way behind engine tech, especially in the lower-budget ranks.
You let us down with those pics you posted…where’s the pic of the “very latest dog engagement tooth profiles”?
We want to understand what makes it possible for this thing work. Without that, the pricetag alone puts it in the science fiction catagory for me.
I’m thinking maybe dual profile engagement teeth positioned by the phenumatics, allowing de-cel w/o kicking out of gear, but also an intermediate position w/ a ramp to allow engagement of the next gear before dis-engaging the previous gear. Downshifts would take some trickery. “Closed loop” makes it sound to me like it might have a power cut of some sort.
Got any more clues for us?
Weedburner, we’re planning on spending more time on the phone with the Quaife guys on this transmission. We had about 10 minutes with them in their booth and we had to roll, but we got contact info and they were excited to get into more detail with us.
Hopefully I will have more to report in a week or two.

Or is it basically just an oversized motorcycle trans?
Speedy there is a transmission that will handle 1000+hp and ftlbs. Its the T-56 Magnum Extreme from American Powertrain. And its about $3.5K. I put one behind the Cherry Bomb Camaro works perfect and is dead ass reliable. Camaro had 850 hp.
Nobody heard of G-force? http://www.gforcetransmissions.com/# if you have street tires, the lack of traction can make any transmission survive. If you huge HP and have slicks, you need a grown-up tranny.
These guys rock in NHRA Stock and Super Stock. I want one, bad
This thing looks waay lighter than a T56…
Hey Jack Pine why don’t you marry the G-Force if you love it so much.
