SEMA 2011 – COPO Drag Race Camaro From GM Performance

SEMA 2011 – COPO Drag Race Camaro From GM Performance

As we said last week (and were widely questioned about!) GM Performance has unveiled their Copo Camaro drag race package concept car here at SEMA. Like the drag packages from Ford and Mopar, this car is not intended to be used on the street and is aimed at the NHRA and IHRA’s stock eliminator class. The car is a real looker with a purposeful stance, blown 5.3L motor, slicks, Ford 9-inch rear end, and roll cage.

While the car here at the show has a supercharged 5.3 (HMMMM…think they are looking Ford right in the eye on this one, after all the Cobra Jet has a 5.4L blown modular enggine) we’ve heard from the folks at GM Performance that there could be a couple engine options for the car if (we believe it is more like when) these are available for sale. Expect the 7.0L naturally aspirated mill to be on the option list, as well.

As you’d expect, the car has a manual steering, a drag race front suspension with adjustable struts  and out back there is a solid axle (9-inch Ford) with sway bar mounts and wheelie bar mounts already in place if the owner wanted to add those items. The brakes are lightweight pieces are are fully manual.

Other items of note:

Fiberglass hood

28″x15″ slicks out back

Fuel cell

NHRA approved roll cage

Full factory interior minus the rear seat

Powerglide transmission

We do not know what the price point will be on this car yet. If we can glean that information we will pass it along! Scroll down for more photos of the Chevy COPO Drag Race Package Camaro

Chevy, (sadly), hasn’t made a decent rear diff. in years, so they just did the logical thing. It would have been nice to see a 12-blt. in place though, as I’m sure Curry or somebody could have supplied those as well as Dana 60’s for the Mopar continginent.

we got. Six speeds might be a bit much for 1320, but you can always use the first 4. On that note, I think manual trannys should be mandatory. Maybe I’m truly old school, but AT’s are boreing! Like I heard a little while back: “If you ain’t got a clutch, you ain’t got much!”

hopefully it weighs a hell of a lot less than a normal one, i have to say though, this is the first new camaro ive seen that i actually like

The drag pak Challengers do not come with a
rear at all, just a trailing arm to hold the back tires on. You install the 3rd member of your choice.

  5. Turbo Regal

Most Super Stock racers run 9″ rears regardless of make.

I doubt if a racer would take it out and put in a 12 bolt just to keep it all GM.
