Next Generation Mustang to Sport IRS and A Global Platform

Next Generation Mustang to Sport IRS and A Global Platform

It appears there are only about three model years left to grab a Mustang with a solid rear axle. Motor Trend is reporting that the next generation of Ford Mustang, due out in 2014, will have independent rear suspension and it will ride on a so-called “global platform” that Ford can use in multiple places to fit multiple needs. There’s no doubt that IRS is more advanced and refined than a solid axle, but it is also impossible to argue which is stronger in stock form. Even saying that, attending an “all Mustang” drag strip event will leave you wishing you had a mobile unit to rebuild rear ends. Now you’ll need to keep U-joints on hand.

The interesting caveat in this whole thing is that Ford’s global rear drive platform is supposedly lying dead on the floor. Alan Mulally has said it makes no sense for the company to build a car that can only be sold in one country. With the platform the car would have been put on being called DOA, we wonder what the next option is.

The last thing that caught our eye were the three general directions that the car could go in for its next iteration. The MT story puts up the options of slightly tweaked version of the current car, a more European feeling turbo-six-powered machine, or an ultra high tech GT-R fighter. The only one that does not make us teary is option A. Here’s hoping.
