NHRA Approves Camaro-ish Looking Body For Pro Stock

NHRA Approves Camaro-ish Looking Body For Pro Stock

The NHRA has approved a Chevy Camaro body for used in Pro Stock this season. According to NHRA.com, the cars may appear as soon as the Gatornationals. That means that Ford will compete with the Mustang, Chevy will compete with the Camaro, and Chrysler will be running the Dodge Avenger. Yeah, we said Dodge Avenger. Hopefully a Challenger body is in the works for late 2012 or perhaps 2013. It would at least revive the pony car was in Pro Stock, although the SuperCar Showdown at the ADRL races will be using actual production cars, but we digress.

The body is being made by a company named Five Star. All of the necessary NHRA approvals and checks have been made and chassis builders are already building 2012 Camaro SS Pro Stockers for several of the teams that fly the GM colors. The whole “body approval” process got forever more involved after Dale Armstrong got the green light to run his wild “Batmobile” 1987 Buick funny car body before the windows were cut out of it or it wore paint. It showed up at Pomona, everyone panicked and the NHRA was forced to live with it for a year while ol’ AA-Dale and Kenny Bernstein ate everyone’s lunch.

Anywho, we don’t know what they cost and how long you’ll have to wait for one to slip over the tube chassis of your top sportsman car. In defense of this body, it looks better than most of the fifth gen Firebird bodies we have seen in person or in photos.

Avenger is better than the alternative. You shoulda seen the proposals for a Challenger Pro Stock body. The front view looked like Kenny from South Park…two eyes inside a hoodie with a big roof. Wicked bad frontal area

I like what the burkester on Drag Racing Online says – get back to stock bodies (as in pro *stock*) pro modified bodies look like slot cars already, and pro stock doesn’t speak to the average Joe in the street as it should. Get back to win on Sunday sell on Monday, not cartoon show on Sunday, drive your front wheel drive peg leg smogger on Monday…

On the Fivestar website, the Camaro body in ultra light weight carbon fiber with windows sells for $13,280.00. And yes, it is quite ugly.

I would rather watch 8 second production bodied Pro Stock cars run heads up than the 6 second streamliners Pro Stock has become. The current Pro Stock class is merely a bunch of naturally aspirated, cubic inch limited, Pro Mods.

Why not drop the current Pro Stocks, replace the class with Pro Mod, and then add an actual production bodied Pro Stock class. ESPN can drop Paul Page too.
