NHRA has teamed up with the Outlaw Racing Street Car Association to solidify the racing operations end of the new “NHRA Unleashed” series. This four-race series will feature heads-up doorslammer action ranging from Outlaw 10.5 cars up to weekend warrior machinery that will all compete in a multitude of heads-up classes. ORSCA was one of the organizations that first rode the wave of excitement and popularity that now surrounds the world of small-tire doorslammer racing. It’s been around since 2004.
This also seems to be a move to solidify participation in the four “Outlaw” classes that will be contested at the races. Those classes are, Outlaw 10.5, Limited Street, EZ Street, and Modified Street. By bringing ORSCA in, one would assume that they’d also be bringing in ORSCA racers.
The fact that the NHRA has created this series to get in on this style of drag racing is interesting. Competitors in these classes certainly do not need any validation for their dedication and talent, but the recognition of what was once a style of racing that it seemed NHRA had no interest in is good.
Do we think that outlaw 10.5 cars will be competing at NHRA national events some day soon? Probably not because they’d embarrass the hell out of the Pro Stock competitors in short order, but we’d love to see them as part of the fold.
NHRA promises a “festival” atmosphere at the track and this series will be nothing like a typical NHRA National event. Clearly this series is geared toward a totally different demo than the traditional “big show.”
We’ve heard some great inside info on this deal and we’re excited to see how it pans out this season. Four races is the tip of the iceberg. If it works, look for the series to expand, and soon.
