We’ll be up front in telling you that we had no idea George Barris’s shop turned out anything other than the occasional beautiful kustom mixed among a majority of semi-garish stuff. We had never heard of the Turbosonic creation before. This was a car modeled after a fighter jet and powered by a Turbonique rocket axle.
A Canadian collector has the car and recently wrote a piece on it for the website Canada.com in it he spills the beans about the car’s extremely short racing history. It blew up on its first trip to the track due to the team not following the proper procedure with the Turbonique unit.
It’s a neat read about a car we never knew existed. The writer does seem to take a couple of shots at Barris, mainly on some of the deatils on this car and another Barris creation he owns.
