“Is there anything more American than America?” Well Dodge and Bob Dylan, I don’t think there is. Bob Dylan is described by many to be one of the most profound and talented poets in American music, and yet I don’t think he had to think too hard on this one. While there were several good car commercials during the 2014 Super Bowl, it was once again the guys at Dodge that threw the proverbial touchdown. “Detroit made cars, and cars made America.” Great words my friend, great words.
What I like so much about this two minute long commercial… is not just the message. It’s the images, the message, the emotion, all wrapped up, that tell a story that makes you proud to be American, regardless of whether you are a Mopar guy, a Ford guy, or a Chevrolet guy.
Our favorite line? “So let Germany brew your beer, let Switzerland make your watch, let Asia assemble your phone… We will build your car.”
To tell you the truth, while Bob Dylan is cool, and he makes a statement by being in this commercial, the words would resonate just as strongly from a Housewife in Indiana, an Autoworker in Detroit, or a Fisherman in Seattle.
Maybe that’s why the words are so good.
What do you think?
Cool commercial but Radioshack had the best one for the Superbowl.
Then why do I have this sinking feeling that Radio Shack has probably discontinued the electronic service bits that I’m going to need (the only reason I’d ever go there)?
Me too. Radio Shack seems to have actually known what it was doing in the ’80s. Now, they’ve lost their core audience and tried to become a cell phone store. They shouldn’t have sent the ’80s off packing in a DeLorean – they should have brought them back in Optimus Prime’s trailer.
Cars made in america with the money made going to Italy since Fiat owns the dodge brands, the commercial was a fail IMO
Or the fact that the new Doadge Dart is in fact, simply a rebodied Fiat…
Completely incorrect, it is in fact a highly altered Alfa Romeo platform, not a Fiat model at all.
Message saying US has their car mojo back with a little swagger.
Which is complete and utter BS … and I don’t mean Bangshift
A fail on more than one front IMO . First being the fact that most everything in Chryslers current line up … with the major exception being the JK …. is either a rehashed FIAT or Mercedes
Second problem being Mr Dylan himself , Trust me .. I know the Cosmic Chameleon .. face to face …. and Bob’s face for that commercial had make up by Portland Cement and Revlon … put on in layers with a bricklayers trowel . Yes …. that bad !!!
Third … the now very tired and total BS rhetoric Dylan spews out in the commercial that Chrysler is in any way ‘ American ‘ …. doing a goram thing for the city of Detroit … or in the least bit concerned for the US in general …. seeing as how the ‘ New ‘ FCA’s HQ’s gonna be Holland ,.. with tax shelters in the UK and Milan … and nary a representation in the US or Canada …
Sum up ? A total farce !
Chrysler … imported from [ fill in the blank ] and assembled in the US and Canada … sometimes
Dylan should be ashamed of himself for appearing that way … as well as representing Chrysler in any way shape or form . But then again … Dylan being the amoral chameleon he’s always been … he has no shame and no doubt took the money ( quite a pocket full from what I’ve heard in the business ) .. and ran like hell … laughing his arse off all the way .
A Lesson from one who knows ? Love Dylan for his music …. but never put your trust in the man . You’ll be severely disappointed if you do 😉
Sorry, but if one can get past the fact that way too many people probably didn’t recognize Dylan in a non-singing role, it was a great commercial (notwithstanding Mopar’s now-Italian ownership).
Chrysler makes the only desirable large North American cars. Its Ram trucks have won two MT TOTY awards in a row. And an Alfa-based Dart and advanced Multiair turbo engines are big, sporty steps in the right direction.
Mopar is on a roll.
It’s and Italian roll, not sour dough! (American original?)
exactly, also, bonus points for the use of Goram
funny, just watched Serenity last night, totally right about Bob too, great lyricist but a total chameleon.
You are in dire need of a little remedial training as to what Chrysler is, where it’s money is, and where various platforms come from. There are no Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep products coming from outside North America at this time.
The LX cars are not nearly as Benz as the former owners bragged they were, and the new 200, and the Dart were both designed and engineered in Detroit from a smaller Alfa product, they are not the same car at all.
I’m sure you likely think the current Ford Taurus is more an “American” design than the Charger (you labeled German), if you do then you would be wrong. Not all is what it seems.

The best car commercial for the Superbowl was for one of the worst cars . Maseratis commercial nailed it . But … errrr ….. was there a Superbowl ? All I saw was one actual team and either the Keystone Cops in Broncos uniforms …. or … the Broncos .. having taken a detour to the Stupor Bowl ( its real ) before showing up at the Superbowl
Maseratis commercial was great.
LAME!
Being a diehard ” Mopar Guy ” I like what he is saying except that Chrysler & Mercedes are owned by the same people, and all the computer and electronics that go into each car and truck are made by “Asians” , so all we have left is that Dodge & Chrysler are American in name only ……………..
I don’t need Germany to brew my beer, I do not own a watch, I guess I have no choice on the phone, right on with American cars. Great images and I’m definitely there with the use of Dylan. Liked the Stingray commercial also.
Seriously, Bob Dylan is a big Pro-America-capitalist? I rolled my eyes so hard I may have damaged my eye sockets.
We own a Chrysler 300 C with a Hemi, and it’s nothing but trouble.I think the ad was great but it should have been made for Ford who never needed or asked for any bailout.
Ford never asked for bailout? Really? They may not have used it but they certainly asked and got $9 billion line of credit from Uncle Sam, not to mention the over $5 billion in energy loans. It’s all semantics my friend.

I liked the words as spoken and even the message but like others have said Chrysler is a name only and I dont see the company as American anymore. That said on subjects like this we are more edjucated on the subjects of cars and the company’s who make them than the “average” consumer.
My 21 year old Air Force A1C daughter thought it was dumb, and way too long….I asked if she got the message, she was like eahhh… I know that could be a fail on my part too.
The best car commercials where the Maserati ones, followed by the Jag one toward the end of the game (not the “end” 12sec after kick off).
The chevy, Maserati and Chrysler comercials sucked…best one was the Audi commercial hands down. The effing Doberhuhu was hysterical!!
I thought all the car commercials were not quite up to being mediocre nonsense. It was a mix of jokes mood setting, but not much about the car.
A few weeks ago BS linked to a commercial for the 71 Olds 442. Now that had me ready to write a check that day, I f I weren’t 40 years too late.
That was Bob Dylan? I thought someone brought Vincent Price back to life.
http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/news/auto-blog/maserati-super-bowl-ad-surprises?src=spr_FBPAGE&spr_id=1457_42747200 research goes to say they are the same firm.
I dig Bob Dylan but talk about blowing wind. The words where inspiring but had no real substance to back them up. The big three auto makers and associated industries should be ashamed of themselves for leaving the city of Detroit hanging out to dry. The auto industry built that wonderful industrial city and then pulled out leaving it a desolate war zone. Until automakers bring jobs back to this country (at this point I think Detroit would be content with even low paying jobs), Dylan’s 2 minute rant is garbage.
I wish Chad was right but I don’t agree. With a few exceptions Chrysler has been building boring crapy cars for the past 30 years. Daimler bought them and tried to make a difference but failed, which is why the Italians are trying now. To be honest I would be more likely to buy one knowing that it is based on a Fiat chassis but I still don’t think the styling is all that interesting. As far as the whole “American car made in Detroit” thing goes, it’s sort of a moot point anymore… Some parts are made here, some in Mexico, some in Canada, some overseas… the major auto makers are all international corporations, very little in the automotive industry is exclusive to any one country or continent anymore. The good ol’ days are gone and I don’t think they are coming back. At least there are a few car guys still there who are able to convince the corporate brass to throw us a bone every now and then like the Challenger and hopefully the Cuda in a year or two even though they are so damn expensive, and still not really as cool as the muscle cars of the past. It is what it is…
No one mentions the one with Seinfeld and the Pacer? This is Bangshift Dammit! Where are your roots!?
Funny that a site for hot rods and muscle cars has so many “gear heads” that have no idea that almost all American cars are born in Detroit. This total bull about stuff coming from other countries, etc applies to every auto maker in the world. You think VW or Benz don’t get crap built in Mexico or China? Guess again, think Toyota/Honda build all their own parts in Japan? not a chance.
Chrysler (for full disclosure, yes I’m employed by) is owned once again by a European owner, one that so far has done hell of a better job than the last couple owners did. Chrysler cars and trucks are designed and engineered in a massive complex in Auburn Hills Michigan, that was nearly gutted and emptied by the jerks from Benz. Since Chrysler has been run, and now owned by Fiat activity and employment there has boomed back to pre Daimler Benz days.
While the latest small and midsize products may be based on an Alfa platform, they are 100% American versions and highly modified from those beginnings. (try comparing the Alfa and the Cherokee and then tell me the Cherokee isn’t American.)
If using a platform with roots in a foreign land is so bad, then I guess you would also dislike the Swedish Ford Taurus and Explorer, and not even want to look at the Aussie Camaro or Chevy SS.
Sorry for the rant, just sucks to watch politics blind people to the truth, that reminds me, in spite of what the Trump spewed, none of Jeeps products are imported from China, and they never will be, they are built in the USA.
