Our buddy Walt Dumont has a pretty neat deal on his hands that honestly, we just might be a little bit jealous over. He’s getting to play with military trucks. “Big deal”, you might say…there’s plenty of us out there that have played with them, myself included. But not like what Mr. Dumont is doing. By luck, by fate, or by reputation as a skilled wrench, he’s managed to score a gig where he has been working on some older units that are museum-kept. Think World War II-era Jeeps and a Vietnam-era M151A1, and it’s his tasking to get them up and running.
Museum vehicles might seem like an easy deal: check fluids, do some function tests, and make sure the gas hasn’t turned into Jell-O, but it’s much more complicated than that. Every last system needs to be checked out and verified that it’s all good…and when he mentions a master cylinder filled with what looked like tapioca pudding, that isn’t all good. That sounds like a pain in the hind quarters. And add in having to find parts for vehicles this old. It’s a job, no doubt, but given the simplicity of both the Willys M38 and the Ford M151, overall we’d find any of them to be a great way to spend some time in the garage. We’re glad to see him bring these old workhorses out of mothballs and onto the roads again!
