Cool Project Thread: Tearing Down an Air Cooled Stroker VW Motor

BangShift member Stiney has a bunch of cool stuff lurking in his barn, including a Fox-bodied Mustang with a 500ci Cadillac engine in it. His real affliction though, seems to be VWs of the air-cooled persuasion. We’ve seen cool photos of his own sand rail in action and a while back he took in a buddy’s VW powered ‘rail for repairs.

The broken engine is a 2275cc stroker mill. When Stiney initially eye-balled the problem it seemed that a cracked cylinder liner was the worst of the trouble. Upon further inspection, the whole bugger had to come apart and he is now starting the process of sticking it back together.

We’ve never been inside one of these engines and have been watching this thread intently as it has been updated with photos and plans for what the revived version of the engine will be. The little engines can make surprising power naturally aspirated but we’ve also seen them blown, turbocharged, and hit with nitrous.

Hit the link below to see the thread and look inside one of the most produced automotive engines of all time!
