Project Car Update: Progress on the AMX/GTO Project – It Runs!

Project Car Update: Progress on the AMX/GTO Project – It Runs!

The AMX/GTO project that we introduced to the world last winter is the insane combo of a late model GTO and a 1969 AMC AMX. The work is being performed at the home shop of our buddy Scott who lives less than a mile from us. He has done an amazing amount of work thus far and the machine is now running and functioning like an actual car. Burnouts and all!

There is still work to do as you will see in the photos below, but the heavy lifting is all but done. The car runs and drives, the dash has been integrated and is fully functional. The gas tank has been mounted and the button to flip the gas cap door open even works. The exhaust has been installed (although Scott is going to further modify it by tucking the tail piped closer into the bumper.

The main reason that the car is not completed is due to a long stint in body man jail that was made even worse when said body shop actually folded up. Scott rescued his car and has been thrashing on it hard ever since getting it back. When he told us that it was running and we needed to check it out, not a moment was wasted.

This project really is bad ass and the fact that Scott has been handling the whole thing himself is beyond impressive. He keeps telling us that the car just “fell together”. If we built it, the machine would just “fall apart”. There’s a difference!

(Original project intro for those of you who don’t know about this one!)

Why would you even do that? What a bastardized POS! You took two cars that stood on there own merits quite well and combined them to make what? A f*cking mes!

Whatever, I think its great! This person has creativity, thinks out of the box, and I think we need more people like that than someone that sits in front of a screen talking negatively about someone that’s obviously doing something they love. Great job Scott!

If you had any clue how poorly those AMX’s were built you would know this is the best thing to happen to it! when you look inside at the way it’s made it looks like a kid in shop class built it! Now at least it is solid! well constructed and modernized

What a great project, Its impressive you can integrate completely different makes. It will be interesting to do a road test result with a late model GTO. Hopefully you can incorporate the traction control and anti lock brakes. I allpaud the engineering and fabrication skills needed to pull this off.

This car has all the GTO power options the entire gto is in it. I used every thing from the power trunk release to the abs, traction control, The fire wall was grafted in so everything would bolt up even the gto wiring harness was used. Outside it is going to look like a stock AMX, You know the hotwheels version the interior will resemble the gto with only the door panels being the final hurdle. Both cars were junks so its ok all can relax.

Well Grancuda, let me say first I actually really like these cars, I almost bought one way back. black 390 go pack car. Beside that, when I saw the way the stucture was poorly welded in the AMX/GTO I was very disappointed. minimal tack welds, some not even making a contact. the way the quarter panels fit entirely different on each side along with many other points. Like I said I like these cars but I don’t think they can hold a candle to the GM cars I have owned as far as build quality.
