Project Update: The East Coast’s Newest Nostalgia Nitro Flopper Nears Completion!

Project Update: The East Coast’s Newest Nostalgia Nitro Flopper Nears Completion!

It has been a while since we last checked in with our friends Dana Hard, Jon Wall, and the rest of the henchmen at Custom Automotive Machine in Weymouth, Mass. The guys have been in the process of putting together a full tile, VRA legal 1969 Mustang nostalgia Funny Car and they are close enough that we can nearly smell the spent nitro. With a woodpile of spare long blocks and veteran wheel man and tuner Mike Smith on board to get the car down the track, things are really coming together for the guys. We’re going to do on record right now and say that this car will be one of the best looking in the country as the paint will be laid on by none other than our pals in the “Bat Cave Body Shop”, Chuck and Blair.

All these old school (looking) floppers have cool names and this beastie will be no exception. You’ll see some of the concept art work below, but the car will be run under the name, “The Hard Guys” and feature a mobster-lookin’ dude on the flanks with a pair of heaters pointed at the opposition in the other lane. We dig the name and as we said above, the paint work on this thing is going to be top shelf.

It’s super cool that Mike Smith, son of long time nitro car wrench Paul Smith will be helping Dana and the crew get a handle on their car right out of the gates because nothing is worse than blowing up every piece you have while “figuring out” nitro. Smith and his dad have made their professional reputations as guys who know how to get cars to run hard and consistent without having to fire up a third shift at the bauxite mine.

Scroll down to see their work and the work of local chassis man Jon Sandahl who made several alterations to the chassis and roll cage portion of the car to make it fit properly and meet all the current safety specs and regulations. To all the nostalgia flopper fans out there who follow those rules and regs, yeah, this baby has the carbon brakes on it. It should be running far harder than 240MPH when Hard, Smith, Wall, and crew get honed in on the tune up!

Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars rule and the craze continues and for good reason. When leaving the shop our five year old right hand man said in a gravely serious voice, “Dad, that car is totally awesome.” Yes kid, it is.
