Ian Johnson has built some pretty cool stuff, and owns some serious off-road machines, so it is a little weird to hear that he owns a Smart Car and digs it. I’m not bagging on a Smart Car, as I’ve been infatuated with these little cars since first seeing them in France in 1999. The first year for Smart Cars in Europe was 1998 and it would take a full decade for them to get to the United States. They are a seriously cool little car and I’ve driven a couple in my day.
But building one into a “Prerunner” is a whole other thing. Since I think having a smart car with a Hyabusa swap would be an absolute riot, I can’t argue with anything else crazy that you might want to do with one and since I’ve seen them built into just about everything else, why not an off-road machine? I say go for it and love what Ian has done with it.

I never thought I would LOVE owning a Smart Car as much as I do, but it really is a fun car to own. The idea of building it came late in the season planning process and it was supposed to just be a fun little episode to shoot, but man this car has taken on a life of its own.
