The Mangled Mercury Project: Part 6 – Making The Sail Panels, The Last Major Panels Get Fabricated For This Awesome Chop Top 1939 Merc.

We introduced the Mangled Mercury Project recently and shared the first cuts, plans, etc. for this soon to be cooler ride. We continued with more videos in the series, and if you missed those then the link is below. Those episodes include massaging roof panels, changing the windshield height, reshaping, and more. Just cutting the top down doesn’t make the car look right, as it can be boxy and not smooth like the front of the car wants the rear to be.

So in this one they are shaping the sail panels that will go from the body to the sexy new roof. These panels will make the top flow into the body like it came that way.

The Iron Trap Garage crew are never without projects, but this one is special because it feels like it has been forever since they chopped or channeled anything. But that is all about to change with the Mangled Mercury project. It’s time for this rough machine to get some love and that means cutting the top into multiple pieces in preparation for some pretty substantial styling changes. Changes that we totally approve by the way. I mean who doesn’t love a chop top on a hot rod?

If you haven’t ever seen how a chop goes down, this is going to seem a bit extreme, but they have to cut the whole roof off. And from there the roof is going to get cut up some more and then put back together with some new sheet metal as well. It’s going to require a lot of welding and metal shaping and we love it.
