With all the talk of dragsters and funny cars around here recently, we went shopping for one on RacingJunk. After seeing several “normal” floppers, we saw this car, which we have read about on the pages of Diesel Power magazine for sale. Sporting an inline six Cummins diesel, the car has run down in the 8.60s and regularly sees action in Super Comp. It certainly makes black smoke like a champ, by the looks of the photos.
While you may be scoffing at the thought of an eight second funny car, we think that this machines is kind of neat. It is definitely on the bleeding edge of diesel drag racing performance. As one would expect from a diesel, the grunt power of the engine off the starting line is where this thing makes some numbers. The seller claims that the car turns short times in the 1.15-1.19 second zone.No specifics are given with respect to the gear ratio or if there is a transmission (a slipper style clutch could be used like a Crowerglide).
This isn’t a car that has been run a couple times and then parked. It has seen competition at several NHRA National events and has cleaned up at diesel drag racing meets all over the country. The sale price is a steep $75,000. With all the work needed to build and then develop the car, it doesn’t sound too crazy.
We’d like to see it end up in the hands of Gale Banks!
