RacingJunk Find: Period Correct 1973 Camaro Vintage Road Racer

There are few cooler things in gearhead history than the Trans-Am wars of the late 1960s and early 1970s. That series in that time combined all that is right and good in the world–Pony cars, manual transmissions, screaming small blocks, fat rubber, and winding road courses. With the resurgence of interest in old Trans-Am racers, there are many vintage races these days, plus opportunities to just thrash your junk at open track events. This killer 1973 Camaro we found on RacingJunk.com would be just the ticket for either duty.

If you squint hard enough, the car looks close to the Ed Leslie driven Chaparral Camaro that was a staple on the Trans-Am circut in the early 1970s. The car has a solid record as evidenced by some race wins and high finishes in racing series point standings. We wish there were more photos, but the detailed list of parts and components paints a pretty good picture.

The motor is a nice 355ci small block Chevy that the seller claims makes 394 hp and is topped with a Holley carb on a Holley intake manifold. There is no crazy trickery, high end exotic components, or dry sump. It’s a car you can service in your own garage between races.

Since the car was built to the 1972 SCCA rule book with respect to the suspension and brakes, it is stone simple in that department as well, using monoleaf rears with spring sliders, a panhard bar, and sway bar. Up front it is 650-pound coil springs and a sway bar. The brakes are from a Corvette.

We’re in love with this car. Maybe we can rent it for a lap or 50?
