Revealed: What the Chevy Caprice Cop Cars Will Look Like, Link to Tech Manual

The talk and rumors have started to turn into facts regarding the upcoming Chevy Caprice police car editions. There will be two basic packages sporting at least one familiar option code, that being 9C1, the other is 9C3. The 9C1 cars are what you’d call a typical police cruiser, while the 9C3 cars are the “detective” or unmarked cars. Both will haul ass and Chevy seems poised to dive into the police car market as Ford readies to dump the familiar Crown Victoria.

Power for the Caprice PPV will come in the form of a 355hp 6.0L LS motor. A heavy duty 6L80 transmission will send the power to the driveshaft, which will turn 2.92 cogs and a limited slip differential. It will be an IRS out back. Being that the transmission is a six-speed, the 2.92 gear isn’t as bad as it sounds. This mother will top end like crazy though!

As you’d expect it is chocked full of all kinds of heavy duty features like all cop-mobiles are. The A/C is designed to shut off when the throttle hits the carpet, the transmission won’t allow the motor to over-rev if the car is in low gear and the driver fails to upshift, iridium tipped spark plugs are used because they have less of a chance of messing with radio equipment.

Sadly these cars will not be sold to the general public. Will they filter out over time? We hope so. They’ll end up in the wrecking yards too, but that will take a long time if they live in the normal world of regular fleet maintenance like most police vehicles do.
