Rumor Confirmed: Drag Package Camaro to Debut at SEMA – Count on It

Rumor Confirmed: Drag Package Camaro to Debut at SEMA – Count on It

BangShift has learned, through a trusted source that the rumored Chevrolet Camaro Drag Package car is a reality and will make a debut at the 2011 SEMA show next week. The car is the third such offering from the Big Three joining the Dodge Challenger Drag Pack and the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet package cars. At this time we are unable to confirm engine offerings but we believe that both supercharged and naturally aspirated plants will be available.

Rumors have been flying for months about the car. Chevy has a tall order on their hands if they plan on fighting the Cobra Jets, which have been hauling the mail for a couple of years now. Currently the quickest Cobra Jet in the country belongs to Tasca Ford’s Carl Tasca who is deep into the 8.0s. It makes sense to us that the LS9 engine would be on the table as that mill can certainly trade blows with the blown 5.4L modular engine in the Cobra Jets. Since the Dodge contingent does not have a factory supercharged offering, it would make sense for GM to offer a naturally aspirated engine to match up with the Challengers.

We sincerely hope that this development in a factory horsepower war the likes of which has NEVER been seen before results in drag racing sanctions developing some dedicated classes for these cars. We can bet that once the Camaro drag package get their stuff sorted out, heads-up shootouts between the Camaros and Cobra Jets will happen with regularity.

Again, the rumor has been confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt. Chevy is climbing into the factory drag car business. Much more info to follow as we get it!

Love it!! Can’t wait to see it!
They should also be able to trim some weight out of it!

Gonna be interesting to see if they beef the IRS or use a live axle….
The wheel hop with the IRS I’ve seen so far looks brutal!!!

carbon fiber, it’ll be way too FAT. But then 4,000 lbs. is probably close enough for “Government work.”

    Yawn. Zzzzzzzzz

OK so when is the NHRA gonna pull their heads out and change the Pro Stock rules to use modified Camaro’s Mustangs and Challengers , dumping the Silhouette Formula and bringing back the excitement of Factory Wars ( even if the factories aren’t involved )

What part of this does the NHRA NOT get I ask ?

Look for ’em in their own classes next year in Stock Eliminator. Thay had a pilot run at the D1 Open the other week. Heads Up CJ’s and Drag Paks at common weight breaks. It was quite ashow. The ’08 stick CJ’s has been Factored right out of Stock and is currently Super Stock only…the NHRA told one owner not to cut the car up over te winter because they will be back in Stock in some capacity for 2012.

    Can’t wait for the Camaro…

this is good news. However, these factory racecars need to be in FX classes, NOT Stock Eliminator, since they’re NOTHING close to what you can buy as a production car. Example: how many V10 Challengers do you see in Dodge dealers lots?

  6. Grippo

They will be in their own classes, Ed. They will have their own factors if you can believe the rumor mill. Then thay can batter the new index to a pulp without obsoleteing the older combos. The American Muscle class at this years Dutch Classic was, I believe, a precursor of next year…Bring on the Camaros!

Uhh…someone needs to tell “Speedy” that they’ll pro’lly do whatever IT TAKES to get these cars down to raceing weight and competitive. U think Father G.M. is gonna show up to just get their a$% handed to ’em? I think not. Ain’t nobody tryin’ to sell on Monday by winning on Sunday ain’t gonna show w/ a knife to a gun fight. Anybody called “The Grump ‘ yet?

Grippo, my opinion is they shouldn’t be in Stock Eliminator at all, no matter what kind of new “class” NHRA creates for them. They should all be in SS, or maybe even Comp. They’re FX cars, not production stock. Run the REAL PRODUCTION Mustangs, Shelbys, Camaros and Challengers in Stock, like the category was originally intended for.

to get this one outta my head. Guess it’s cause I’m from a time when ALL of the “Big Three” went A/FX racing with the likes of swiss-cheese Catalinas (yeah, big car, still lighter than an Accord), light-weight Galaxies, and of course ,those wonderful fly-weight, altered wheel based Ramcharger Dodges. Point is, there WAS a time when the factories had no problem w/reproduceing bumpers out of aluminum, wheels from magnesium, acid-dipped body panels, fake rear seats,( and sometimes FRONT seats,LOL!) and enough titanium to launch a spaceshuttle. Oh, how I long for the good-old days! Course, ther are things that could be done to make this new-age of “factory-stock” drags more interesting. Do it like the ADRL boys down here in the South do in RealStreet and LimitedStreet Elim.-limit ’em to a 275 radial and take away their wheelie-bars. Some of these guys are runnin’ deep in the 4’s @ a-buck-fitty,1/8th.
