Site of the Week: All about Burt Munro

With Bonneville Speed Week 2009 set to begin in mere hours, we thought it would be appropriate to look back at one of the legends of the salt. New Zealander Burt Munro is one of the most inspirational and interesting characters to ever turn a tire at Bonneville.

Munro’s story is one of doing things that others said were impossible, foolhearty, or just plain stupid. Munro went to the beat of his own drummer and in the end it paid off for him. He worked his whole life for a shot at the salt and when he got it he took advantage. Munro raced multiple years at Bonneville and his name was often found in the record books at the close of the events.

Was this guy a hot rodder? The stories of him casting his own pistons in the ground and using old pieces of gas pipe to build the cylinder jugs for his motorcycle engine have us sold. If you have not seen The World’s Fastest Indian with Anthony Hopkins, you owe it to yourself.
