It seems a little weird that we’d be choosing a commercial for an electric car as our second favorite car commercial of the 2014 Super Bowl, but we are indeed. After all, who would have believed the ad agency when they walked in and said “We’ve got an idea for a commercial where the SMART Electric Car Goes Offroading.” I have to admit I dig the little SMART cars and have since seeing one for the first time years before they ever reached the States. On a trip to France for work, I saw them everywhere, and loved the fact that you could practically pick one up and stuff it in a parking spot. Of course the Americanized version that are Hyabusa powered brought a whole new level of hot rodding bitchinness to the party, but that’s for another day.
What’s cool about this video is the fact that the vast majority of the commercial is shot somewhere out here in the California desert I’m guessing, and because of it’s simplicity probably makes it one of the cheapest commercials to play during the Super Bowl. When it attempts to climb the dirt incline and ends up shooting a rooster tail of dirt from it’s REAR tires, I am sure most of you thought “Holy crap, those things are rear wheel drive!” as you had never realized it before. I really wish they had called us to come help shoot this one as it would have been great fun to see how bad we could tear it up off road.
With over 100 mpge, meaning 100 miles per gallon equivalent, coming from all these little tiny electric cars, it’s hard to argue with the fact that they make a lot of sense for people that mostly drive short distances, in town, and who need something easy to park when they get to work. I hope everyone buys one so we don’t have to worry about burning gasoline in our fun cars.

Dropping a Smart EV into a stereotypical SUV commercial setting? Brilliant, hilarious, and gets the point across very well.
However, the regular Smart seems to make a bit less sense than a normal compact car – the tiny size ought to give it good mpg, but it’s not much better than a Civic. Kinda seems to defeat the point.
I have sen video’s of a smart car with a Hyabusa engine that probably got close to the same mileage and was a helluva lot more fun. Although I wouldn’t want to drive a smart car or a frickin civic.
hack the roof and doors off and its an electric go kart with license plates. fine by me.
I saw a Smart roadster in Germany three years ago, the only cool Smart I have seen so far.
