The flywheel is one of those parts that most people just don’t consider when it comes time to purchase upgrades. Gears? Oh, sure…and be sure to upgrade to a limited-slip diff while you’re digging around in the case. Upgrading the clutch is a no-brainer as well, especially since it’s probably due right about now for a late-model machine unless you just took it off of the showroom floor. But the flywheel doesn’t get looked at often…and it should. The weight of the flywheel will determine off-the-line and at-speed acceleration and deceleration characteristics, and let’s be honest…a bit of lightening and an SFI rated unit replacing the stock piece isn’t a bad call to make, now is it?
Hays has released four new billet aluminum flywheels that are SFI certified and ready to take the place of the stock or questionable aftermarket piece that might be in your ride. Why go for a new flywheel besides the SFI certification? How about reduced rotating mass, which could not only accentuate the fun stuff but also potentially increase your fuel economy. Now, if that isn’t a smart move, we don’t know what is.
The new flywheels work on the following:
- 2009-2017 Dodge Challenger with 5.7, 6.1 or 6.4 Gen III Hemi
- 2015-2017 Ford Mustang (all engines)
- 2012-2013 Ford Mustang 5.0L with the nine-bolt pressure plate and eight-bolt crankshaft
- 1986-1995 Ford Mustang and Mercury Capri 5.0L
