Ford recently released the results of a survey conducted among owners of EcoBoost powered models. The results were overwhelmingly positive, and seem to be validating Ford’s decision to champion the twin turbo six cylinder engine as a replacement for a larger displacement V8. A full 100% of people surveyed said that they were satisfied with the engine’s performance. It’s tough getting two people to agree what color the sky is, so that’s a heck of an accomplishment for FoMoCo.
Ford claims that this engine has single handedly brought younger, more affluent buyers into the showrooms and has also been effective in bringing shoppers who were loyal import buyers back into the domestic fold.
According to the release from Ford, they have moved more than 10,000 cars equipped with the 3.5L V6. Currently it is offered in the Ford Taurus SHO, Ford Flex, and both the Lincoln MKS and MKT.
The current six cylinder is the first in the EcoBoost wave. A four banger is on the way, and there is even a 1.0L three-cylinder being offered in the Asian market. By 2013 the engine family will be available in 90% of Ford models (we’re guessing the last 10% are the trucks) and that would mean more than one million engines per year.
We’d be all giddy about turbos showing up in the junkyards, but when we tell you that the huffers on the V6 are small, we’d be lying. They are tiny. You could just about get your thumbs jammed in the inlets of them. They’d be bad ass on a garden tractor, just not your hot rod.
