If you are into metal shaping, or are learning about metal shaping, then you know about shaping tools like hammers, dollys, English Wheels, planishing hammers, shrinkers, stretchers, etc. A power hammer is also a metal shaping tool, and one that quickly moves metal around so that you can shrink and stretch it. The power hammer works with different shaped dies and can do a lot of work in hurry, but like many other shaping tools it requires practice to learn how to use it right.

The only problem with power hammers, like the famed Shape-O-Matic, is that they are expensive and so that makes them hard to get for many home builders and shapers. This is a project that is fun and that will have your other friends wanting one for themselves. I’d love to have one in my shop, but there are some other shaping tools that I need to acquire first. This isn’t usually the first shaping tool someone is going to get, but if you want a fully outfitted shop then it needs to be on the list of possibilities.
