Cordless Tool Testing: What’s the Most Powerful 3/8″ Impact You Can Buy? And Do You Need One?

Everybody is familiar with how bad ass 1/2 inch cordless impact guns have gotten, and it seems like just about everyone has one in their shop or garage. And there are a lot of heavy-duty shops that are now using 1 inch models as well for field repairs and such on heavy equipment. On the other side of the spectrum, we also have the 1/4 impact drivers which are super useful in a ton of ways. But what about the 3/8 drive units?

This is the size we most often use for sockets and such, so does it make sense to have an impact gun that size? I have a cordless 3/8 drive ratchet, which is super handy and fun to have in the toolbox, but do I need a 3/8 drive impact. Hmmmmm.

I think I might, and here’s why. 3/8 drive sockets are much thinner walls and tend to fit into places easier than a 1/2 drive impact style socket will. So my thought is that the smaller impact gun and correspondingly slimmer sockets might be a handy thing to have for certain jobs. So if we assume that we need one, how do two big players stack up against one another?

Watch and find out.
